Abstract:
This Creative synthesis is a look at Interactive Read alouds and how they can benefit Elementary teachers and students. Teachers can use IRAs as an Instructional practice to teach the Reading Anchor Standards and their expansion through Kindergarten and Fifth grade. Teachers can also use IRAs to guide students and make them active participants in the construction of knowledge. This practice will increase the amount and quality of analytical talk and help teachers create dialogic classrooms where teachers are the facilitators of the learning. It has been noticed that Elementary teachers and teachers of at risk learners tend to read simple, predictable books with easy concepts. IRAs give students access to more complex, high quality texts and exposure to a variety of genres. I will share some of the steps I have taken to bring this practice to the K-3 classrooms in my school and what our next steps will be in the process. I will provide the resources I have found helpful and make connections from my graduate work at NCSU. |
How I got hereMy Journey to Interactive Read AloudsI have been teaching in Johnston County Schools for 17 years. I have taught in Kindergarten and First grade classrooms. One of the things I have noticed in the past 5 years in my current school is time increased in Reading groups and the disappearance of whole group reading time and fewer books being read aloud to students. Students reading on their instructional level is important, however it will not expose them to the more challenging texts that they can comprehend when being read to. After my first class I read Steven Laynes, In Defense of the Read Aloud. This prompted me to do something about it. Throughout my graduate school classes I have determined some important elements of Interactive Read Alouds. After graduation I hope to further my journey with IRAs and help teachers incorporate this practice in their classrooms to benefit the students of our school.
